ARES/NARC Members Provide Communications Assistance for Bicycle Race

On Saturday, April 23, 2011 eight members of Amateur Radio Emergency Services and Nittany Amateur Radio Club provided communications assistance to the Penn State Cycling Club.  The club held the Easter Collegiate Cycling Conference District 1 Eastern race in the Black Moshannon State Park near Philipsburg on the western end of Centre County, Pennsylvania.

Participating were:

  • Woody, K3YV, who coordinated amateur participation
  • Carmine, K3CWP
  • Mike, N3LI
  • John, W3JXP
  • Jim, KB3TBX
  • John, N3GU
  • Don, N3DBN
  • Tom, KkFTB

Amateur radio operators were station at the race headquarters near the park Ranger Station, at the top of the first major hill, and at the bottom of that hill.  As racers passed the hilltop the information was relayed to the bottom of the hill to coordinate with Milesburg Fire Police who were directing traffic at that location.  The operation ran from 9:30 AM to almost 5:00 PM.

Amateurs monitoring the Fire Police talk groups were able to assist getting some information to the race directors about a problem elsewhere on the route so they could take corrective action.
