Unpaved of the Susquehanna River Valley and Amateur Radio

On Sunday October 9th the Unpaved of the Susquehanna River Valley was held in the Bald Eagle State Forest.  Eight hundred riders started from the Miller Center in Lewisburg, PA to ride several routes in the Forest, one of these was over one hundred twenty miles. The race is true to its name with very little of the courses being over anything that could be considered ‘paved’. The courses were all loops that ended at the Rusty Rail in Mifflinburg about ten miles south west of Lewisburg on the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail.  Ten amateur radio operators provided communications support between five  aid stations and Incident Command at the Miller Center throughout the day.

Participating amateurs were:

Centre County

K3CWP, Carmine Prestia
W3KCK, Dave Kolesar
K3CLM, Chad McKissick

Cumberland County

W3AND, Andy Mummert

Perry County

KC3FVN, Keith Comp

Northumberland County

KC3FEZ, Richard Weddigen

Snyder County

AB3CE, Al Yessel
KB3FXG, Barb Yessel
KB3MSP, Sue Reisinger
KB3MSO, Gene Reisinger

Fortunately, most of the radio traffic was administrative with no serious injuries or crashes handled over the network.  The weather cooperated and though it was cold when the race started the weather was beautiful for the rest of the day.

Thanks to the Unpaved for inviting amateur radio participation, the above stations for giving up the greater part of their weekends, and the W3YA and N3VTH repeater systems for use of their machines.
